چکیده

Post-focus compression (PFC) of F0 and intensity is found in Beijing Mandarin and has been claimed not to easily transfer in language contact. Two experiments were conducted to investigate the presence of PFC in second language (L2) Mandarin as a function of learners’ language experience. Five groups of L2 Mandarin learners were investigated: older, midage and younger Quanzhou Southern Min learners, and American Chinese-heritage and non-Chinese-heritage learners. Findings were that older speakers of Quanzhou Southern Min did not show PFC in their Mandarin, but younger speakers did perhaps because of more extensive Mandarin use. NonChinese-heritage American learners did not produce PFC in their Mandarin, but Chinese-heritage learners did, perhaps because they had been exposed to Mandarin at an earlier age.

Prosodic Realization of Focus in Bilingual Production of Southern Min and Mandarin

Previously post-focus compression (PFC) - the lowering of fundamental frequency (F0) and intensity of post-focal words to below those of the same words in identical sentences with neutral focus - was found in Beijing Mandarin but not in Taiwan Southern Min and Taiwan Mandarin. This study investigated whether the presence of PFC would vary with age and language use of societal bilinguals of Sout...

Post-focus compression in English by Mandarin learners

This study examines the phonetic realization of focus in L2 English by L1 Beijing Mandarin learners for insight into the effect of language experience on the acquisition of L2 prosody. Compared to American speakers’ production, experienced Beijing Mandarin learners of English were able to produce native-like duration change and in-focus expansion of intensity but not in-focus expansion of F0 an...

Closely related languages, different ways of realizing focus

We investigated how focus was prosodically realized in Taiwanese, Taiwan Mandarin and Beijing Mandarin by monolingual and bilingual speakers. Acoustic analyses showed that all speakers raised pitch and intensity of focused words, but only Beijing Mandarin speakers lowered pitch and intensity of post-focus words. Cross-group differences in duration were mixed. When listening to stimuli from thei...

Prosodic Focus with Post-focus Compression in Lan-Yin Mandarin

Post-focus compression (PFC), the lowering of pitch range and intensity of the post prosodic focus components, is a phenomenon that has been found in various languages worldwide. The interesting findings of the presence and absence of PFC in two closely-related Mandarin Chinese languages, Beijing Mandarin and Taiwan Mandarin respectively, have brought several discussions on the historical origi...

Production and Perception of Focus in PFC and non-PFC Languages: Comparing Beijing Mandarin and Hainan Tsat

Prosodic marking of focus has been found to be typologically different in terms of existence of post-focus compression in F0 and intensity (PFC). In the current production experiments, we found that PFC showed in Mandarin, but not in Tsat (a language spoken in Hainan, China) or in Tsat-Mandarin (Mandarin spoken by Tsat people). The perception experiments further showed that focus perception in ...
